To live is to participate, and art participates in life. Standing in front of a picture in a gallery, you can ask questions. An exchange takes place. In art, if you say ‘Oh yes!’ – if everything is understood – it confirms what you already know. It is not interesting. Questions such as ‘And what does it mean, then?; the realization that there is something which is not there but does exist! – that is what I find exciting If it comes to that, the only things that affect me are things that jolt me – Bill Culbert In conversation with French curator Gladys Fabre in 1986
